85% of Audiobook Producers Now Use AI, But Real Cost Savings Are Far Below Industry Hype

«Who is Narrating the Future? AI Adoption, Use and Outlook in Audio Production,» published by Dosdoce.com in partnership with Frankfurter Buchmesse, finds the publishing industry has moved from AI skepticism to active adoption in less than a year — while warning that unchecked growth could damage listener trust in the format.

Bilbao / Frankfurt — September 2026 — Dosdoce.com, in collaboration with Frankfurter Buchmesse and Frankfurt Audio, today released Who is Narrating the Future? AI Adoption, Use and Outlook in Audio Production, a global study examining how artificial intelligence is reshaping the production of audiobooks, audio drama, and podcasts.

The report draws on questionnaire responses from 53 publishers, production studios and distributors, contextualized by insights from 32 additional audio professionals across Europe, Latin America, North America, Africa and the Middle East — more than 85 contributors in total.

Key findings

  • 85% of respondents already use AI in at least one phase of audio production, while 15% report using no AI tools at all.
  • 17% have integrated AI across more than six phases of their production workflow, evidence that adoption is shifting from experimentation to operational infrastructure — though the report cautions that broad usage still lags the adoption headline.
  • Real cost savings run between 20% and 50% in the second and third year of AI adoption — well below the 85–95% figures frequently promoted by technology providers. The report attributes the gap to comparisons of isolated cost lines rather than complete production workflows.
  • 86% of respondents cite voice quality and rights transparency, and 79% cite data privacy, as the leading criteria when selecting AI tools or vendors — ahead of cost savings (44%) and technical support (33%).
  • 86% of respondents expect disruptive or moderate industry growth attributable to AI over the next three years, expanding audiobook catalogues into backlist, academic, niche and non-English-language titles that were previously economically unviable.

Coexistence, not replacement

The report’s central finding is a broad industry consensus around a hybrid future rather than a binary choice between human and synthetic narration. «We do not foresee a total replacement of human narration,» said David Roa, founding partner of Extrarradio Producciones (Colombia) and co-author of the report, describing a «three-speed» model already used by several producers: premium human narration for flagship titles, a hybrid model in which AI handles mechanical production stages under human creative control, and fully synthetic narration for backlist or niche titles that would not otherwise reach audio at all.

«We are confident that by the end of this decade, we will see the coexistence of human production and AI production, making viable titles that were not viable before, without displacing human narration,» said Javier Celaya, founding partner of Dosdoce.com and co-author of the report.

A call for transparency and fair compensation

Beyond adoption figures, the report highlights a set of unresolved industry challenges: the need for rights and licensing frameworks adapted to AI production, fair compensation and consent-based practices for narrators and translators whose voices and texts train AI systems, and full transparency toward listeners about how AI is used. In this context, 90% of respondents said the industry needs to implement greater disclosure toward authors and consumers to overcome the barriers to scaling, and 60% called specifically for ethically licensed voice datasets and fair compensation for voice talent.

The report also stresses that AI-driven expansion could reinforce, rather than correct, existing global inequalities in audio representation unless the industry invests deliberately in underserved languages and regions such as Latin America, Africa, the Middle East and Eastern Europe.
